Daniel Priestley has a concept that changed how I think about building a practice: in any industry, there are roughly ten people who get most of the opportunities.
They get the speaking invitations. The warm introductions. The inbound calls from people who’ve already decided they want to work with them before the first conversation. Premium rates without justification. The best clients who refer more best clients.
These people are key persons of influence. And the thing that separates them from everyone else isn’t talent, credentials, or even track record.
It’s visibility around a specific idea.
The Problem With Being Well-Rounded
Most experienced professionals are excellent at many things. That’s part of the problem.
When you can do everything, you stand for nothing in the market’s mind. Potential clients can’t remember you. They can’t refer you easily. They can’t position you in the conversation they have in their head about who to call for a specific problem.
The well-rounded professional gets considered for many things and chosen for few of them. The specialist — the person who is known for one specific thing, deeply — gets considered for less and chosen for almost all of it.
Priestley’s framework for becoming oversubscribed starts with a counterintuitive move: narrow down before you expand out.
The Five Ps
Priestley describes five things a key person of influence does:
Pitch — they can articulate what they do and why it matters in a way that’s memorable and specific. Not “I’m a consultant.” Something with a point of view attached.
Publish — they put ideas into the world consistently. Books, articles, talks, content. Not for vanity metrics. To create a body of work that demonstrates how they think.
Product — they have something to offer that scales. Not just time-for-money consulting. An IP product, a framework, a methodology that can reach beyond one-to-one delivery.
Profile — they show up in the places their ideal clients and referral partners look. Podcasts. Events. Publications. Associations.
Partnerships — they build relationships with people who have complementary access to the same audience.
Most experienced professionals skip straight to profile — trying to grow their visibility — without having a clear pitch, published ideas, or scalable product. The audience arrives and finds nothing to hold onto.
What This Looks Like in Practice
I’ve watched people with twenty years of expertise become genuinely oversubscribed in eighteen months. Not by working harder. By getting clear on a few things:
Who specifically they’re for. What specific problem they solve. What belief drives their work. How they deliver it in a way that can scale beyond their personal time.
Then publishing consistently from that position. Not writing for everyone. Writing for the specific person they most want to help.
The compounding effect of that kind of focused visibility is significant. Each piece of content you put out builds on the last. Each speaking opportunity opens another. Each referral is easier because the person referring you has a clear, specific story to tell.
The Reignite Framework Connection
This is exactly what Reignite Advisors is designed to help with. Most of the professionals we work with have the experience and the results. What they’re missing is the clarity and the structure to communicate it powerfully.
The WHY Discovery process gives you the foundation — the belief and purpose that makes your positioning authentic. The advisory architecture builds the scalable offer around it. And then the visibility work has something real to amplify.
You don’t have to be everywhere. You have to be somewhere specific, saying something specific, to someone specific.
That’s how you become a key person of influence. Not by doing more. By doing less, but with far more clarity.
